Utengule in the Filter Subscription

Utengule is an everyday pleaser. The subtle citrus notes of this elegant bean become more pronounced as the temperature drops while hints of orange zest are soon complemented by the sweetness of cranberry compote. The silky smooth mouthfeel is rounded off with a pleasant aftertaste of Earl Grey tea with delicate cocoa undertones, completing the aromatic experience.

About the farm

Utengule Coffee Estate takes its name from the nearby village of the same name. It was founded by missionaries in 1919 and purchased by the current owner, Hans Faessler, in 1986. Today, the fertile soil, warm summers and heavy seasonal rains provide optimal conditions for growing high quality coffee. Utengule is located near the borders of Zambia and Malawi.

The farm is located in the perfect place for coffee cultivation. Clear mountain water trickles down from the Mbeya Mountains and is used to irrigate the farm. There’s an on-farm nursery to grow new seedlings, enablling them to continuously renovate aging rootstocks. Approximately 100 hectares of the farm is a protected nature reserve where local flora and fauna can flourish.

The estate is dedicated to creating a system where nothing is wasted and everything contributes to better coffee. Pulp from processing is recycled into compost, and wood from pruning is converted into biochar, which is mixed with compost to make the soil more fertile. Wastewater from processing is used to irrigate coffee trees.
